Wedding insurance that covers the parts of the day you cannot predict

One policy for the things a wedding cannot plan away. Deposits, cancellations, supplier failure, wedding attire and gifts.

Why event insurance

Wedding insurance protects the couple against costs they cannot control: supplier failure, illness on the day, deposits lost to cancellation, damage to wedding attire, missing rings or gifts. Most weddings never claim, but the cost of one claim can exceed the price of the whole policy. Sensible for any wedding with significant deposits placed.

When planning your wedding or event, it is worth checking whether your venue requires you to have insurance.

Do I need wedding insurance?

Most weddings do not claim. But between the venue deposit, the caterer, the band, the photographer and the honeymoon, the total sitting on your credit card by the day of the wedding is significant, and one supplier going under can cost more than the whole policy. Wedding insurance covers the parts of the day you cannot control.

You are covered as soon as you take out a policy, during the lead-up to your event and on the day itself, from the illness of a close family member to a supplier going out of business. Taking out cover early in your planning journey means you are protected right from the start.

Wedding insurance 101

Ultimately the choice is yours, but with the average wedding costing around £30,000, even small disruptions can have a big financial impact.

Having the right insurance for your needs can give you much-needed peace of mind. A suitable policy could help cover the cost of rearranging your ceremony, recovering a lost deposit, and other unexpected expenses.

What does wedding insurance typically cover?

Cancellation and rearrangement, supplier failure, damage to the wedding attire, loss or damage to rings and gifts, personal liability at the event, and (with some policies) marquee cover for outdoor and dry-hire weddings.

When to buy

The earlier the better. Once deposits are placed and the honeymoon is booked, you have money on the line that a policy can protect.

It is good to shop around

In the lead-up to your wedding and on the big day itself, wedding insurance offers peace of mind. It is always worth comparing options to find the right cover for your budget and protect your plans.

What does insurance cover?

Some of the reasons you might want wedding insurance. Do check the specific policy details for your own cover: what follows is a guide, not a policy.

  • Cancellation by your venue

Damage caused by flood or fire, or the venue going bankrupt or into liquidation.

  • Illness, accident or bereavement

Cancellation due to the illness, accident or death of a member of the wedding party or a close family member. You may need to check that pre-existing medical conditions are covered.

  • Extreme weather

Cancellation due to extreme weather making it impossible for you and your guests to get to the venue.

  • A supplier who does not turn up

A supplier no-show, and the cost of arranging an alternative. Make sure you have a written agreement when booking.

  • Lost, stolen or damaged items

Wedding rings, the cake, the flowers, outfits or gifts.

  • Photographs and video

A technical fault with your wedding photographs or video preventing the final prints being produced.

  • Personal liability and legal action

A big one for your venue. It covers you if accidental damage is caused to the venue, or a third party is accidentally injured on the day. You may need to check whether guests are covered by your policy.
